1. What is a Martingale collar?
A Martingale collar is a two-loop design slipped directly over your dog's head. The leash is attached to the smaller loop and is engineered to tighten down the larger loop when more control is needed. This "humane squeezing down," non-gagging characteristic, is helpful when walking your dog and when they have a "Wow! Is that a squirrel moment?," or the neighbor's dog has escaped its fence, again, and a confrontation is looming.
Dog trainers often recommend the Martingale to their clientele for the added benefit of control it provides. Sighthounds, including Greyhounds, Whippets, Borzoi, etc, have small heads and long necks and must wear a Martingale to prevent them from backing out of their collar.
2. What size collar should I order?
Regal Hound collars come in a variety of sizes and widths. To order a collar that will fit your pet, it is very important for you to accurately measure your dog. You will need a soft measuring tape to obtain the most accurate dimensions of your dog's neck and head. Just follow the directions below:
- Dimension A - Take your measuring tape and begin under the chin and around and in front of the ears. This measurement is the most important, especially if your dog is a non-sight-hound breed! The Martingale does not have a buckle, so it must fit over the widest section of the head! It is then tightened down by using the adjustable sliders.
- Dimension B - Take a second, loose measurement around the narrowest section of the neck, right behind the ears.
- Dimension C - Take a third and last measurement loosely around the neck at the point where you would prefer the collar to rest.
On the other hand, if your dog falls in between measurements, always order the next size up.
To select your dog's collar size, use the largest dimension of the three measurements. Using the table below, select the largest size that includes your dog's measurement to ensure a comfortable fit.

Length |
| X-small | Italian Greyhound | 7-11" | X-small | Toys | 7-11" |
| Small | Whippets | 10-15" | Small | Miniature Schnauzer | 12-16" |
| Medium | Most Greyhounds | 13-18" | Medium | Beagles | 13-20" |

For example, if your dog's measurements are:
Dimension A - 18 inches
Dimension B - 16 inches
Dimension C - 17 inches
You would select a Large martingale collar because it will easily slide over your pet's head and can then be tightened to fit his neck comfortably.
If your dog's measurements fall out of the above chart, please enclose the exact measurements during checkout and we will make sure the collar is a good fit.
Please take the time to measure your pet accurately, following the illustration above. The Regal Hound hand crafts each collar based on the size given to us by the customer. We cannot be held responsible if the size given is incorrect.
About Width
Width suggestion is given based on the size and length of your dog's neck. We might not always consider comfort first, and beauty second - but your pet's comfort should always be paramount. Dogs do not enjoy a beautiful collar if is feels like a turtleneck sweater and they do not have enough room to bend their heads.
I have a very large male Greyhound. Rebel likes his comfy 1.5" wide collar for around the house. He saves his 2" collars for special occasions or Meet and Greets.
Bonnie likes her 1" wide for lounging around the house. She is walked on lead with a 1.5" collar because she likes to pull and I feel this width gives her more comfort when she spots a squirrel and the collar tightens.
Ryan is a medium-size hound and has only one eye. The 1.5" Martingale is a great help in the house, when I need to grab the control loop before he has hit his head on a wall or door jam. Also, his depth perception is poor and the 1.5" collar is easy to spot in those circumstances.
These suggestions, of course, are only my opinion. Use your best judgment when choosing your collar width. If you have any questions do not hesitate to call me at 843-486-3859 or e-mail me.
Special width orders for toy or minature breeds (less than 1") may be requested during checkout, or feel free to call me at 843-486-3859.
The Regal Hound hand-crafts each collar based on the size given by the customer. We cannot be held responsible if the size given is incorrect.
3. How do I adjust a Martingale collar?
It is important to properly adjust your new Martingale Collar.
Move the collar up to the narrowest part of your pet's neck and pull upwards on the control loop (the "D" Ring is attached to the smaller loop). The two metal slides should come together but not touch each other. There should be a two finger distance between the two slides. The correct adjustment will ensure the tightening down of the collar when you need it most.
All collars present the possibility of choking. Never tie your dog out with a martingale collar!
4. How do I clean a Regal Hound collar?
- Remove all tags.
- You may hand or machine-wash your collars in cold water with a mild detergent. If using your machine, place your collar in a lingerie bag and use the gentle cycle. Never place your collars in the dryer.
- If your dog has scratched his collar and you notice a few loose threads, run a lighter very quickly over the threads. keep the lighter moving. This will singe back the snapped threads.

8. What is your shipping method?
The Regal Hound ships domestically via U.S. Priority Mail. This method takes between 2-3 days. The shipping and handling costs are $5.50 and adjusted accordingly when shipping rates go up. This rate is based on an average cost to ship to any North American address.
The Regal Hound uses U.S. Global Priority to ship overseas. This method usually takes 4-10 days.
9. How long will it take to receive my collar?
We strive to mail every collar within 2 to 4 days of receiving your order. Of course, the turn-around on large orders may take longer: we have to make each collar before we can mail it. Your collar should arrive about 2 to 3 days after we mail it, if you're within the United States. During peak holiday season delivery time may double, or triple. Please be sure to add enough time for delivery if you are presenting your collar as a gift to a lucky canine friend!
10. Why does my collar look different than the sample picture?
Decorative trims are limited to certain widths!
All Regal Hound Collars are wrapped or lined with coordinating fabric, unless specifically ordered without the lining. The width of that particular collar is shown to the right of each sample picture. Therefore, it depicts the appearance of that trim on that collar width. If you order a narrower width, there will be less fabric lining seen or none at all, correspondingly, the wider the collar the more lining will be seen. I like to use the word, "framing," and it can give the collar an extra depth as opposed to an "edge to edge" trim. These techniques are equally distinctive.
